Nestled into this existing SW Portland neighborhood, an abandoned church property was obtained by Habitat who deemed it an ideal candidate to meet the need they see for larger detached single-family homes that are also affordable. Our team found a creative and efficient means to maximize allowable density by tucking the homes into the sloping site, clustered around European style woonerf driveways which prioritize a quality experience for people over functionality by cars. City planners and surrounding neighbors alike have appreciated this concept and look forward to this transformation.

Building upon our prior project with Habitat, we worked together to develop robust documentation of building construction and high performance heating / cooling / ventilation systems that will support their efforts to make the hybrid volunteer + subcontractor construction process proceed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. This kind of in-depth problem solving is unique and represents an important opportunity to truly support their mission.

These homes are designed to optimize functionality for multi-generational families while reducing (with the potential to eliminate) their utility bills and cost of maintenance over time. Designing for healthy families within an active, healthy community is what it’s all about!
